Lindsey W. Cooper Jr.


Lindsey W. Cooper Jr. is an experienced trial lawyer whose practice focuses on tax controversy and litigation matters with the IRS and business litigation.

Before moving to Charleston, Mr. Cooper was a trial attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice, Tax Division and represented the IRS in federal courts. In 2004, Mr. Cooper received the Outstanding Attorney Award from the Department of Justice.

Mr. Cooper litigated highly publicized tax shelter cases, including Black & Decker Corp. v. United States and Schering Plough Corp. v. United States. Mr. Cooper is also experienced in litigating issues involving the tax treatment and valuations of family limited partnerships (“FLPs”), penalty abatements, wrongful disclosure lawsuits under Sections 6103 and 7431 of the Internal Revenue Code and responsible officer cases under Section 6672.

Mr. Cooper, with his enforcement background at the Department of Justice, assists tax planners and accountants in reviewing transactions for compliance and risk from a litigation perspective.
